learn more about Thanksgiving; Thanksgiving exists in various countries all over the world but it are mainly the Americans and Canadians who really celebrate this day in full glory. Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day every fourth Thursday of November. The Thanksgiving holiday is a day of showing your gratitude for a good harvest, at a time when all the food planted ahead of the winter has been gathered and stored. Most of the vegetables and fruits thrive during fall, summer and spring due to the favourable climatic conditions. Hence, very few food varieties grow during winter. This is why it was critical to have adequate food that would last through the cold season which was collected and stored at a time when autumn ends. This was seen as a good time to be thankful for all the foods harvested and a good reason to create a special holiday for this event; Thanksgiving. The date of Thanksgiving 2011:
| Thanksgiving 2011 USA: | 24th of November, 2011 |
| Canadian Thanksgiving 2011: | 10th of October, 2011 |
The first Thanksgiving is said to have been a special meal that was shared over a hundred years ago between European neighbours and Native Americans. The European neighbours are recorded to have migrated to Plymouth Rock and with the help of the Native Americans they were taught how to effectively grow food in readiness for the winter period. Even though these pilgrims, as they were later known, experienced a difficult first winter within America,
they had a bumper harvest and were very hopeful the year would be better hence they celebrated by having a "thanks giving" meal.
This year we're celebrating
Thanksgiving 2011 and a lot has changed when it comes to the holiday after the very first one, just like the easter (go here for
easter 2012) and other Christian holidays. Americans still celebrate Thanksgiving Day with abundant meals while giving thanks for the things they have and cherish. The most popular ingredient for a thanksgiving meal in North America is the turkey, usually baked in the oven as a whole before
served on the dinner table. A number of reasons have been put forward as to why this old tradition called Thanksgiving is still celebrated in America. First, it is considered to be a perfect time for families to bond. It is during this time that stories are told to children by the elderly members in the family. Besides, they are also taught to cherish family values and most importantly the importance of respecting and admiring their elders as well as eating, praying and living together. Relatives travel from across different states or even countries to congregate with the other family members to celebrate oneness alongside delicious foods and drinks. In fact, special recipes are prepared and enjoyed with amusement moments and dances. The meals prepared on this day contrast those prepared on other days, festivals and that from restaurants. Family members also play games and engage in various other activities together as it is a day of rejoicing and fun besides appreciating and giving thanks for life's little pleasures.
Another reason for celebrating Thanksgiving Day is found in the fact that on this day the elderly members of the family have the opportunity to instil family values to children; especially the importance of living your life respectfully and learning them how to live their lives by narrating some of the hardships they have overcome as well as overcoming their bitter experiences that have enabled them to get to where they are today. Children are also educated on how to map out their lives in their future. Most importantly, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated to thank elders and parents who have stood by us during good and bad times and giving thanks to God.
